How To Put On A Shoulder Rest With HL Tutoring Services

How do I put a shoulder rest on a violin?

Congratulations...You are ready to learn the violin. You have got a violin, a bow, a case, some music, a pencil and even a music stand. Wait! How are you going to feel comfortable whilst playing the violin? You'll probably use a shoulder rest. To be fair, it might not feel very comfortable to start with but it's better with a shoulder rest than without one. Getting a shoulder rest will help you maintain the correct posture so you (eventually) won't need any hands to hold the violin. Make sure you put it on carefully without damaging the bridge or any other part of the violin. Please don't put the violin face-down!

Watch the following demonstration which shows you what to do. Most useful for absolute beginners or those starting out on their violin journey. It is also useful for violinists learning to play the violin online. Click on the video to find out more about putting on a shoulder rest.

Once you've got used to it, practise holding the violin without any hands. You can then progress to walking around the room or house (if you are at home). Please be careful. If you feel you are going to drop the violin, then keep your hand underneath it to support it. For very young learners, parents/carers can help by holding the violin gently. Another helpful idea is to start by sitting down on a soft sofa. If you drop it, then at least the violin won't get damaged. You can then build up to standing up.

Before you know it, you'll be putting a shoulder rest on your violin in seconds rather than minutes. The shoulder rest will help you hold the violin securely and correctly. After some time, you'll notice that it becomes comfortable!

Please note, there are so many different types of shoulder rest in various shapes and sizes. I'll have to discuss the variety of shoulder rests in a future post though.
