To square a number you multiply the number by itself.
To find the square root of a number you do the opposite. Think of the square root as the number used to make the square.
The definition of a square root:
A number that when multiplied by itself produces the given number.

It is a really good idea to learn square numbers and the square root of numbers as you would multiplication and the corresponding division facts. Continue the pattern below:
1 squared 1 x 1 = 1 The square root of 1 = 1
2 squared 2 x 2 = 4 The square root of 4 = 2
3 squared 3 x 3 = 9 The square root of 9 = 3
4 squared 4 x 4 = 16 The square root of 16 = 4
5 squared 5 x 5 = 25 The square root of 25 = 5
6 squared 6 x 6 = 36 The square root of 36 =
